Lehigh heads to Princeton for midweek tilt
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off its first Patriot League victory of the season, the Lehigh women's soccer team looks to build on that momentum when it travels to Princeton on Wednesday (7 p.m.) to take on the Ivy League powers. The Mountain Hawks topped new league member Loyola on Saturday, 2-1, for a much-needed three points in the standings. Lehigh stands just one game (three points) behind a postseason spot with four games still remaining.
Junior Danielle Salans got the scoring started on Saturday with a goal just 8:51 into the game. In the second half, Salans was taken down in the box to force a penalty kick, which senior Murphee Greeley converted for a 2-0 lead. That proved to be the difference as the Greyhounds scored late, but Lehigh was able to hold on.
Senior Katie Gavalchin was recognized on Monday with Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors, with Salans earning honorable mention recognition. Salans is tied for the team lead (with Greeley) in points, owning seven via three goals and one assist. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Blanks has started the last two games and owns a strong 1.15 GAA and .860 save percentage for the season.
Princeton enters Wednesday with a 4-4-3 record, dropping three of its last four coming in. The Tigers started the season 4-1-2 but haven't won since a 3-1 victory at Fordham on Sept. 24. Princeton is coming off a 2-0 loss at Brown on Saturday.
Tyler Lussi leads the team with 14 points behind six goals and two assists. Lauren Lazo is right behind with eight points (three goals, two assists) while Gabrielle Ragazzo has four (one goal, two assists). Darcy Hargadon has seen the majority of time in goal, owning a 1.16 GAA and .703 save percentage.
The Tigers hold a 15-0-1 advantage in the all-time series. Princeton won last season's meeting on its home turf, 6-1. Sophomore Paige Elliott accounted for Lehigh's lone goal late in the second half.
Following Wednesday's contest, Lehigh will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Army for a key Patriot League matchup. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
