BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a strong week, the Lehigh women's soccer team hits the road on Wednesday evening to face Ivy League power Princeton. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Just last Monday, the Mountain Hawks defeated another Ivy League foe Penn, 1-0, before following with a big 2-1 Patriot League victory over Loyola.
The Mountain Hawks got their offense going last week, scoring three goals after four straight games without a goal. Sophomore Lexi Chang scored at Penn while classmate Adrian Vitello got Lehigh on the board against the Greyhounds, converting a rebound just over one minute into the second half. Not long after Vitello's goal, freshman Sabrina Mertz added her team-leading seventh goal of the season off a free kick to make it 2-0, which proved to be the difference.
For her efforts, Mertz earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week laurels, her second weekly award of the season. Vitello and senior goalkeeper Ani Nahapetian both earned honorable mention recognition. Nahapetian stopped 15-of-16 shots on the week, including five-of-six against Loyola Saturday. Included was a stop in the 86th minute which helped seal the victory.
The win gave Lehigh five points in the league (1-2-2 record), just two points behind sixth place in the Patriot League, the last postseason position. The Mountain Hawks are just three points out of second place in the competitive league standings. Bucknell and Army West Point are both tied with eight points apiece with four games still remaining.
The top-ranked team in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings, Princeton has impressed so far this season, owning a 9-3-0 record which includes seven straight wins. Most recently, the Tigers have defeated Brown, Army, Dartmouth and Yale. Princeton is led offensively by Tyler Lussi with 22 points (nine goals, four assists) while Mimi Asom has 19 points (eight goals, three assists), Vanessa Gregoire owns 13 (four goals, five assists) and Natalie Larkin has 11 (four goals, three assists). Hannah Winner has seen the majority of time in goal, playing all but 180 minutes and posting a 1.29 goals against average and .690 save percentage.
The Tigers lead the all-time series, 17-0-1 with the tie coming in 2009. Last season, the Mountain Hawks dropped a 4-1 home final with Vitello scoring Lehigh's goal. Three of the previous four years featured one-goal games, including a slim 2-1 defeat at Princeton in 2013.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday when they travel to Boston University to face the Terriers. Opening kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
