BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a solid effort at the JMU Invitational last weekend, the Lehigh men's soccer team hosts Delaware on Friday night. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks shut-out host James Madison on Friday before dropping a 1-0 final to preseason Big South favorite Radford on Sunday, with both games being decided in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Students can take a bus to the game through the Campus Connector (Green Route). Steps are at Packer Avenue at 6:30 and 7:10 p.m. and Alpha Phi at 6:34 p.m. The Campus Connector runs until 10:50 p.m. from Monday through Friday. Campus Connector buses are scheduled to leave from Goodman Campus at 8:33, 8:47, 8:53, 9:07, 9:13 and 9:27 p.m. (among several times). For more information and a complete schedule, please click here.
On Friday, Lehigh broke a scoreless tie with a goal from sophomore Oscar Greene in the 84th minute and held on for the victory. Senior goalkeeper Jacob Gottwald made a huge diving save in the 89th minute to help preserve the win. His six saves vs. JMU, coupled with making four stops against Radford, earned Gottwald Patriot League Goalie of the Week honors. Over the last two seasons, the Mountain Hawks have beaten James Madison twice and have scored three goals in the process, all scored by one of the Greene twins. Alex scored both Lehigh goals in a 2-1 win over JMU last season.
Friday's win over JMU extended Lehigh's regular season unbeaten streak to seven games dating back to last season. Last year, the Mountain Hawks finished the regular season 4-0-2, leading into their run to the Patriot League Championship.
The Mountain Hawks hung tough with the Highlanders Sunday, remaining scoreless for more than 80 minutes into the game until Radford scored at the 80:28 mark for the game's first and only goal.
Lehigh will face a Delaware team that is 2-0 early in its season, winning 3-0 at Bucknell and 1-0 vs. Fordham. Last season, the Blue Hens finished 10-7-4 and reached the CAA Championship Game. Guillermo Delgado has had a hand in all four Delaware goals this season, recording three goals and one assist while Dani Laguna owns a goal and assist. Marco Siverio and John Schroeder have each dished an assist. Delaware has outshot its opponents 36-16 so far this season, allowing just five shots on goal through two games. Todd Morton has played every minute in goal, stopping all five shots sent his way.
The Mountain Hawks own an impressive 36-16-5 all-time record against Delaware. Last season, the teams met for the first time since 2009 with the Blue Hens coming out on top, 3-2. The previous meeting in 2009 saw the Mountain Hawks cruise to a 5-1 victory.
Following Friday's game, Lehigh will head to Seton Hall next Sunday (Sept. 10) for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
