Lehigh looks to ride momentum at Navy
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following an impressive second-half surge vs. Bucknell Wednesday, the Lehigh women's soccer team hits the road on Saturday to face Navy. Opening kickoff is set for 8 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a huge 3-1 win over the Bison, coming back from a 1-0 deficit with three goals in just 12:18 of action.
Saturday's game will not be streamed on the Patriot League Network, but live stats will be available.
Last time out, Bucknell opened the scoring in the 62nd minute, but Lehigh responded with goals in the 70th, 81st and 82nd minutes from senior Maggie Wadsworth, freshman Julianna Bonner and sophomore Rebecca Van Siclen, respectively. That snapped Lehigh's scoreless drought of nearly three games, with the three total goals marking a season high. The win continued the Mountain Hawks' recent success against the Bison; Lehigh is now 3-1-1 in its last five contests vs. Bucknell. The Mountain Hawks' first league win was also Bucknell's first league defeat, as the Bison were coming off a 1-0 victory over reigning Patriot League champion Boston University.
On Saturday, Lehigh will face another team that entered the week 2-0-0, Navy, and is currently one of just two undefeated teams remaining in league play (along with Loyola). The Midshipmen are 10-1-1 on the season, 2-0-1 in the league. Navy lost its second game of the season, at home vs. LSU in double overtime, and tied Lafayette last time out by a 1-1 final. A balanced offensive attack sees eight players with four or more points. Baseley McClaskey leads the way with three goals and a team-high four assists for a team-best 10 points. Carolyn Mang (three goals) and Cadie Higginson (two goals, two assists) are tied for second on the Mids with six points apiece. Sydney Fortson has started 10-of-12 games in goal, owning a 0.58 goals against average and 77.8 save percentage.
Navy leads the all-time series, 20-4-4, having won the last eight straight. The last two games have been by identical 2-0 finals. Lehigh's last win was in 2011 at Lehigh by a 1-0 final. The program's last (and only) ever win at Navy came in the first-ever meeting between the sides, 4-0 on Sept. 18, 1993.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home the following Saturday (Oct. 12) to host Boston University at 1 p.m. in a rematch of the 2018 Patriot League Championship Game.
