Lehigh Notches Comeback Win Over St. John's
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks keep their win streak alive and extend it to five-straight in a 2-1 victory over St. John’s on Tuesday night at Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh tallied both goals late in the second half to complete its third come-from-behind win of the season and end the Red Storm’s five-game unbeaten streak.
Lehigh (6-2-1) did not have much going offensively prior to tallying back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart in the 77th and 80th minutes. Zarin Tuten netted the game-winner on a corner kick when he one-touched his shot following a pass from Stevo Bednarsky and an initial entry pass by Alex Greene.
The Mountain Hawks had a goal taken off the board when they were called offside in the 76th minute, but Alex Greene found redemption a minute later when he lofted his shot to the left side of the net from outside the 18-yard line. Prior to the Alex Greene goal, Lehigh did not have a shot on goal and St. John’s (5-3-0) held a 10-5 shot advantage.
“Falling behind against one of the best defensive teams in the country it is daunting task to try to come back from. We not only found one goal, but we were able to get two and that is something our guys should be very proud of,” said head coach Dean Koski. “We were feeling the pressure in the second half, but once Alex [Greene] found his goal, that turned the tables for us. From that point, it was a matter of hunting for that second goal and Zarin [Tuten] wanted it badly and came up big for us”
St. John’s got on the board first with a penalty kick in the 42nd minute. Bednarsky challenged Alistair Johnston as he entered the box and contact was issued by both players, but a foul was called on Lehigh. Filippo Ricupati took the shot for St. John’s and converted his attempt to the lower right corner.
The Red Storm did a good job of limiting Lehigh’s chances on the night, holding the Mountain Hawks to just eight total shots and three on goal. Lehigh ultimately got the better of St. John’s defense, which entered the game only allowing 0.36 goals per game. Lehigh’s two goals are the most the Red Storm have allowed in a single games this season as they entered the night with only two goals allowed for the season.
“This was a good win and there is a lot we can use to build from, but we have to let this game go and quickly shift our foucus to Boston. They are a very good team and that is the only game on our schedule that matters right now,” said Koski.
Boston University is also 1-0 in the Patriot League after a 2-0 win at American last Saturday. The Terriers will come to Bethlehem to face the Mountain Hawks on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
