BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's soccer team is set to open Patriot League play on Saturday when it hosts Army West Point at 1 p.m. The Mountain Hawks enter league play 3-4-0 overall, alternating wins and losses through their first seven games. Most recently, Lehigh dropped a tough 2-1 final at Towson in double overtime.
The Mountain Hawks scored first on Wednesday as junior Kayla Arestivo fired a rocket from over 20 yards out, perfectly into the top right corner of the net, scoring a goal for the second straight road contest (also at Monmouth). However, Towson scored the equalizer on a rebound in the 55th minute before winning the game in the 104th minute.
Sophomore Miranda Royds helped backbone Lehigh's defense, making a career-high 11 saves. The game saw plenty of offensive opportunities, with the Mountain Hawks holding a 23-21 edge in total shots. Towson held a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Lehigh owns a four-game unbeaten streak in Patriot League openers, last season defeating Army West Point (2-0). In 2016, the Mountain Hawks defeated Holy Cross (1-0). Lehigh tied Holy Cross in 2015 (0-0) and beat American in 2014 (1-0).
Army is 3-1-4 on the season, with its only loss coming to Penn (1-0). The Black Knights have tied three straight games, all scoreless draws. Army scored seven goals its first four games, but has been shut-out in four straight contests. Erynn Johns leads the Black Knights with six points (one goal, four assists) while Kalie Rosenberger owns four points (two goals). Sydney Cassalia has played every minute in goal, owning a 0.45 goals against average and 0.918 save percentage.
The Black Knights lead the all-time series, 17-8-5, but Lehigh has won two straight and is 3-1-1 over the last five meetings. Lehigh and Army squared off in the 2010 Patriot League Championship Game, a 1-0 Mountain Hawks' win.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday (Sept. 22) at Boston University at 4 p.m.
