BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's soccer team looks to continue its strong start to the season when it heads to Colgate on Saturday for a 7 p.m. opening kickoff. At 7-0-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in Patriot League play, the Mountain Hawks stand No. 9 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings. They are coming off a thrilling 1-0 overtime win over Temple on Tuesday evening.
Against the Owls, Lehigh finished with a 26-11 edge in shots, controlling play down the stretch. Over the final 29 minutes of regulation, the Mountain Hawks fired 14 shots, six of which were on goal. The final shot, from sophomore Clare Severe, found the back of the net to give Lehigh its second straight 1-0 win. The Mountain Hawks' seven-game winning streak ties a school record while their eight-game unbeaten streak ties a school mark. Lehigh remains the only team in the nation that hasn't allowed a goal this season.
Lehigh's shutout streak has reached 822:16 dating back to last season. Freshman Sam Miller has begun her career by not allowing a goal for 748:19. That mark is already the 26th longest streak by any goalkeeper in NCAA Division I women's soccer history. On Tuesday, the defense impressed in allowing just four shots on goal, all of which Miller handled. Tuesday marked Lehigh's second overtime win over Temple in as many years. Last season, current graduate assistant Madi Morgan scored the golden goal to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-2 victory.
Colgate enters the weekend with a 3-3-3 record following a 1-0 win over American in its Patriot League opener. The Raiders' other victories were at LSU (2-1 final) and against Fairleigh Dickinson (5-1). Abby Sotomayor leads the team in goals (five) and points (10) while Eliza Doll owns five points (one goal, team-leading three assists), as does Sarah Coy (two goals, one assist). Sotomayor has scored all three of Colgate's game-winning goals. Kelly Chiavaro has started all nine games in goal, owning a 1.34 GAA and .803 save percentage.
The Raiders hold a 17-7-2 edge in the all-time series with the teams going 3-3-1 over the last seven meetings. Last season, the two teams played to a scoreless draw as Lehigh pressured owned an 8-2 advantage in second-half shots, but couldn't find the back of the net. In the last meeting at Colgate, the Raiders picked up a hard-fought 1-0 win.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home for their next three games, beginning next Wednesday (Sept. 28) vs. Navy. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
