Lehigh set to face Towson and Delaware

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women’s soccer team will look to continue its early-season success when it faces a pair of CAA foes within a 72-hour span. The Mountain Hawks will host Towson on Thursday at 6 p.m. before heading to Delaware on Sunday at 1 p.m. Thursday’s game can be seen live on the Patriot League Network. Lehigh stands 2-0-1 on the season following a dramatic 2-1 double overtime win at Temple.
Sunday marked Lehigh’s third overtime victory over the Owls in as many seasons. Two years ago, current graduate assistant coach Madi Morgan scored the golden goal in the 94th minute to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-2 victory. Last year, current junior Clare Severe scored the game’s only goal in the 99th minute to give Lehigh a 1-0 win. Sophomore Maggie Wadsworth was the hero on Sunday with a goal in the 107th minute, assisted by Severe.
Lehigh wrapped up a 2-0 weekend against Philadelphia schools following a 1-0 victory at Penn Friday night. Overall, the Mountain Hawks have won seven straight against Philadelphia schools. As part of the streak, Lehigh also beat Villanova and Temple last season, and Penn, Saint Joseph’s and Temple in 2015.
Three Mountain Hawks were rewarded for their efforts with Patriot League weekly awards. Sophomore Sam Miller earned her second Goalkeeper of the Week award of the season while senior Alyssa Riporti was named Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore Annika Jansa garnered Midfielder of the Week. Through three games, Miller owns a stellar 0.29 goals against average and 0.941 save percentage. Along with Wadsworth’s game-winner, freshman Lisa Kestelboym scored her first-career goal in the second half Sunday, while Jansa tallied the first goal of her career in Friday’s victory against the Quakers.
Towson enters Thursday 2-1-1, defeating Loyola and Longwood by 1-0 finals, tying UMBC and falling at East Carolina last time out, 1-0. The Tigers have scored three goals through four games, but have only allowed two. The goals have been scored by McKenzie McCaull, Sarah Quick and Evelyn Neidert while goalkeeper Taylor Sebola has been stellar, tallying a 0.47 GAA and 0.895 save percentage.
The Tigers lead the all-time series, 6-1, with the last meeting coming in 2004, a 3-2 Lehigh double overtime win. The teams first met in Lehigh’s first season (1991), with Towson coming out on top, 2-1.
Delaware is 0-2-1 heading into a Friday matchup at Marist. The Blue Hens have lost to Villanova (in overtime) and Georgetown while tying Saint Joseph’s. Jillian Vassalo leads Delaware with three points via a goal and assist while Olivia Schuck and Gabby Johnson also have goals. Two goalkeepers have seen action; Kailyn Rekos has started twice, tallying a 1.49 GAA and 0.769 save percentage while Abby Schlegelmilch has recorded a 1.64 GAA and 0.800 save percentage in one start.
The Blue Hens lead the all-time series against Lehigh, 7-0-1. The teams first met in 1991, a 3-1 Delaware victory. The following season saw a 2-2 tie. The last meeting came in 2006 at Delaware, a 2-1 Blue Hens’ win.
Following this weekend, the Mountain Hawks return home next Friday, Sept. 8 to host Villanova at 7 p.m.
