BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's soccer team will look to continue its success on Saturday when it heads to Lafayette to face the archrival Leopards. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 1-0 overtime win over American, snapping a four-game stretch without a victory. Lehigh did earn three ties in that stretch, however, and has just one loss over its last eight games.
Since a 2-1 overtime defeat at Delaware on Sept. 3, the Mountain Hawks are 4-1-3 to improve to 6-3-4 on the season, 2-1-2 in the Patriot League. Lehigh stands fifth in the league standings with eight points, ahead of Lafayette in sixth with four. The Mountain Hawks are in the mix near the top of the Patriot League despite already facing three of the top four teams in the standings.
Sophomore Annika Jansa was the hero of Saturday's overtime victory over American, rocketing a shot into the left side of the goal in the 98th minute. It marked the seventh straight season that Lehigh and American have ended in a 1-0 final, with the Mountain Hawks now 4-3 in that span. On Monday, Jansa was recognized for her heroics, being named Patriot League Midfielder of the Week for the second time this season.
Lafayette stands 3-6-2 on the season, 1-3-1 in league play. The Leopards have lost two straight, vs. Boston University (3-0) and Colgate (4-1), this after a 1-1 tie at Holy Cross and 1-0 win over Army West Point. Krista Kissell (three goals) and Katie Branigan (two goals, two assists) are tied for the team lead with six points apiece while five others own three points or more. Maggie Pohl has started 10 games in goal, owning a 1.80 goals against average and 0.727 save percentage. Kelly O'Brien has actually played more minutes in goal, despite starting just one game, tallying a 2.00 GAA and 0.787 save percentage.
Lehigh leads the all-time series with Lafayette, 17-8-2. The Leopards won the last meeting in last season's Patriot League Quarterfinals, 1-0 in double overtime. Prior to that meeting, Lehigh had won the previous three, including the last two at Lafayette (2-1 in 2014 and 1-0 in 2016).
Following Saturday's game, Lehigh will head to Bucknell on Wednesday, Oct. 18 for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Bison.
