Lehigh shuts out Mount St. Mary's, 3-0
Box Score
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Junior Grace Correll opened the scoring in the game's fifth minute while freshman Maggie Wadsworth and senior Tori Pantaleo added insurance as the Lehigh women's soccer team earned a 3-0 win at Mount St. Mary's Saturday. The win marked Lehigh's fourth straight shutout to begin the season as the Mountain Hawks have outscored their opponents 10-0 over their last three games and improve to 3-0-1 to start 2016.
"It was a good effort. It wasn't the prettiest soccer, but Mount St. Mary's is a really solid defensive team," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "They're disciplined and kept us in front of them. They made it difficult to create good chances. Having that early goal settled us down and helped us get in rhythm. It was a good day."
Correll opened the scoring in the game's fifth minute as sophomore Clare Severe sent a cross into the box, junior Lexi Chang headed it towards Correll, who did the rest for her second goal of the season.
The Mountain Hawks continued to pressure with three more shots and two more corner kicks over the ensuing 10 minutes. Lehigh eventually extended its lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute as Wadsworth scored her first-career goal, taking a pass from junior Becca Sherry and beating Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Maddy Bunnell inside the far post with a lefty shot.
In the end, Lehigh didn't allow a first-half shot to the Mountaineers until the 59th minute, a shot that sailed high. Mountain Hawks' freshman goalkeeper Sam Miller made her first and only save of the game less than two minutes later.
The margin remained two until the Mountain Hawks added insurance at the 84:08 mark. Pantaleo scored her third goal in the last two games, and fourth goal of the season, to account for the 3-0 final.
Final shots were 13-3 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks had seven corner kicks to the Mountaineers' one. Miller's one save came across Bunnell, who posted two.
Lehigh has not allowed a goal this season and has posted a shutout streak of 453:67 dating back to the end of last season.
"As we've said from the beginning, we want to be a very good defensive team and hard to score upon," said Lambinus. "As a group, they've bought into defending and making it difficult on the other team. We've always said, if we're a good defensive team, offense can come from it. That's what's happened these last few games."
Lehigh now returns home next Friday, Sept. 9 to host Binghamton at 7 p.m.
