Lehigh wraps up season at Holy Cross Saturday
October 28, 2011
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women’s soccer closes out its season on Saturday when it travels to Holy Cross for a 2 p.m. kickoff against the Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks look to wrap up its 2011 campaign with a win, which would push their final Patriot League record to 3-3-1. That would give them a .500 or better league mark for the third straight season.
Despite outshooting Penn, 9-7, on Wednesday, Lehigh fell to the red-hot Quakers, 3-0, in its final regular season home game. Penn entered on a seven-game winning streak ranked sixth in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings. The Mountain Hawks put six shots on goal, but were unable to solve the goalkeeping duo of Sarah Banks and Caroline Williams.
Saturday marks Lehigh’s third straight Patriot League road game after opening with four straight league games at home. The schedule was similar to last year when the Mountain Hawks had a string of three straight league games at home, followed by three straight on the road.
Holy Cross leads the all-time series, 12-7-1, but the Mountain Hawks have responded as of late by going 5-2-1 over their last eight games, including last season’s 3-0 home victory. Lehigh did win four in a row from 2003-06 before the Crusaders responded with wins in 2007 and ’08. Holy Cross’ best stretch came via a seven-game winning streak from 1996-02.
The Crusaders are 2-13-3 on the season, with their victories coming against Central Connecticut State and Bryant. Holy Cross is 0-5-1 in Patriot League play, tying American two games ago. Gina Righini leads the offense with four goals and eight points. Maura Fox and Lauren Wright are tied for second with three points (one goal, one assist). Carly McCabe has started 14 of the 17 games in goal, posting a 1.23 GAA and .827 save percentage. Ashlyn Angell has started the other three games, with a 2.33 GAA and .708 save percentage.
