BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off an exciting 1-0 win over reigning NEC Champion Fairleigh Dickinson, the Lehigh women's soccer will make the short trip to Villanova on Sunday to face the Wildcats. Opening kickoff is set for 5 p.m. On Thursday, the Mountain Hawks got a late goal from sophomore Chloe Tremblay to extend their unbeaten streak in home openers to five.
After recording 20 shutouts over the past two seasons, Lehigh pitched its first blank sheet of the season on Thursday as a pair of Lehigh goalkeepers combined for seven saves. Sophomore Miranda Royds made three first-half stops while senior Lidia Breen made her season debut in the second, tallying four saves for her first-career win. Lehigh increased the pressure in the second, earning a number of quality scoring chances. Sophomore Lisa Kestelboym had a tremendous chance from in close in the 62nd minute, but FDU goalie Amanda Fitzgerald made an impressive stop. However, just over 15 minutes later, Lehigh put one home as freshman Courtney Supp fed Tremblay into the box, who beat Fitzgerald with a low shot. It marked the first-career points for both Tremblay and Supp.
Picked eighth in the BIG EAST preseason poll, the Wildcats are 2-1 on the young campaign, falling at Lafayette (1-0) before beating LSU (2-1, overtime) and James Madison (3-2). Chloe O'Neil leads the team with four points so far (one goal, two assists) while four others have each scored a single goal and Niki Molina has dished two assists. Hensley Hancuff has played every minute in goal, recording a 1.32 goals against average and 0.692 save percentage.
Lehigh is 3-6-2 all-time vs. Villanova, but the Mountain Hawks are riding a three-game unbeaten streak against the Wildcats. Last season, Lehigh won 1-0 at home behind an Annika Jansa penalty kick goal. In 2016, the Mountain Hawks won 2-0 at Nova and the teams tied, 1-1 in 2014.
Following Sunday's game, the Mountain Hawks hit the road next Friday (Aug. 31) as they travel to Monmouth for a 7 p.m. opening kickoff.
