Less is More as Beavers Tip Titans, 2-1
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Marissa Kovac's score from the goal mouth with 2:16 to play lifted unbeaten and No. 21-ranked Oregon State to a 2-1 non-conference women's soccer victory Thursday night over Cal State Fullerton in Titan Stadium.
Kovac won a 50-50 ball in traffic with Fullerton goalkeeper Katie Pulliam after a cross from Brittney Oljar from the right side bounced off a few bodies. It was only the fourth shot of the match for Oregon State (4-0 overall), which got 13 saves from Sammy Jo Prudhomme in her first start in the net of the season. Fullerton (1-4 overall) outshot the Beavers, 22-4, including 14-2 in the second half.
Redshirt senior Stacey Fox gave Fullerton a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when she headed in a rebound of her own shot off Prudhomme. Senior Ann Marie Tangorra's cross set up the initial shot from just inside the top of the box as Fox scored for the third consecutive match and now leads the team in goals (3) and points (7).
The goal also moved Fox into sole possession of ninth place on the school's all-time list and her 36 career points now rank 10th on the school's career chart.
The Beavers tied the match at 1-1 in the 16th minute. Brandi Dawson dribbled deep down the left side and from near the goal line crossed the ball out and back to an unmarked Jacy Drobney who easily beat Titan Pulliam to the near post from about 20 yards out.
Fullerton, which has lost three of its four matches this season by a 2-1 score and has every match this year deicded by a single goal, plays next on Sept. 7 at top-ranked Florida State in a match to be televised on ESPN3. The Beavers host UC Irvine on Sunday in Corvallis.
