LIU Brooklyn Bests Iona In OT
BROOKLYN, NY – The Iona College women's soccer program lost an evenly-contested overtime thriller at LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon. Both teams had exactly 10 shots on goal but it was Marian Awad who scored the game-winner for the Blackbirds in the 94'.
Iona outshot LIU Brooklyn 5-4 in the first half. The Blackbirds applied pressure with five corner kicks attempts but after 45 minutes each goalkeeper had to only make one save. Awad had the lone shot on goal to test rookie Emma Havrilla for LIU Brooklyn. Junior Mariah Elsenheimer came off the bench and supplied the lone challenge on target for Iona.
Both programs had five shots in the second half. Iona had three shots on goal, including one in the 88' by redshirt freshman Mackenzie Meixner. LIU Brooklyn's lone second half shot on target was saved by Havrilla in the 86' on a go from Brittany Fazin.
The Blackbirds got the two points with the first shot attempted by either team in overtime. Awad chipped one softly over Havrilla off a ball played forward by Kimberly Butland. She is LIU Brooklyn's leading scorer with five goals this season.
Elsenheimer and junior Amber Crispin each had a team-best three shots. Meixner rocketed two tries while Sophomore Katie Benson and freshman Marika Niekowal each fired one shot.
Havrilla had two saves in net for Iona against 10 shots faced.
The Gaels return to action at home on Wednesday, Sept. 12 against Stony Brook. The game is being broadcasted on IonaInsider.com and is set to kick-off at 3 PM.
