Lone Goal Of Game Stands Up For Wisconsin
MADISON, WIs. - Wisconsin broke up a scoreless game with a goal in the 65th minute and made it stand up, handing the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s soccer team a 1-0 defeat Wednesday evening at McClimon Soccer Complex.
The Panthers (5-9-2) outshot the Badgers (3-9-2) and had the more dangerous opportunities on the night, but could not break through for an equalizer over the final 25 minutes.
Milwaukee nearly squared the match just minutes after the goal. Freshman Petter Ingebrigtsen volleyed a 67th-minute corner kick off the far post and the rebound was sent just wide by junior Declan Rodriguez.
The Badgers took advantage of one of just two shots on target all night. A long serve into the box found Carl Schneider and his header snuck in past sophomore Liam Anderson at the 64:30 mark.
It was Anderson who came up big minutes earlier, making an impressive save on a breakaway opportunity to keep it at 0-0 in the 57th minute.
The Panthers also had a solid chance to hit the scoreboard in the 60th minute, but senior Kyle Neumann’s header – off a nice buildup from junior Zach Stevenson and senior Laurie Bell – went screaming just wide.
There was not much in the category of clear-cut chances for either team in the first half, with the Panthers outshooting their opponents by a 4-3 count.
In fact, the two teams combined for just two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, both by Milwaukee.
The Panthers had the Badger goalie out in the 27th minute, but were unable to put together anything quickly, settling instead for a shot by senior Luke Goodnetter that was easily saved.
Neumann had Milwaukee’s first attempt in the 18th minute, but was not able to get enough on a nice header flick by Rodriguez, resulting in an easy stop.
Each team maintained stretches of possession, but the closest either came to a first-half goal was when the Badgers hit the post in the third minute.
With the in-state non-league matchup in the books, the Panthers head to Valparaiso Saturday for a key battle for points in the Horizon League standings race. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
