Long Island freshman wowing at goalkeeper
October 12, 2010
You know the drill. Let’s get to it.
Marquee match: The No. 7 Maryland women dealt a heart-breaking blow to Boston College on Thursday, sending the Eagles from No. 2 in our ranking down to No. 8. Colleen Deegan put in a header with eight seconds remaining to pull off the 2-1 ACC triumph for the Terrapins. It’s a tight conference race heading down the stretch, and this result puts Maryland in a good spot and Boston College behind the eight-ball.
Beat down of the week: Alabama A&M(m), meet the backhand of the Virginia men. The Cavaliers passed out a 10-0 whooping on Saturday which was the highest scoring output for the program since 1989. Brian Ownby, Will Bates and Ahkeel Rodney all scored two goals apiece as Virginia came one goal shy of a school record.
We’re streaking!: The No. 33 Hofstra women lost their first match of the season, 5-0 to Boston College, and have not lost since. It’s a run of 12 straight matches that has vaulted the Pride atop the Colonial Athletic Association.
Then there are the No. 51 Wisconsin women who have been downright selfish. The Badgers have posted nine straight shutouts, going 902 minutes without allowing a score. Kudos to Wisconsin and goalkeeper Michele Dalton who is obviously in the zone.
My goal to keep: In last week’s review we went through the top goal scorers in the country. This week, we examine the goal stoppers. Long Island University(w) women’s keeper Jessica Sexton has a .100 goals allowed average to go with a .974 save percentage and a 8-0-2 record. In short, nobody’s touching that. Oh yeah, and she’s a freshman.
On the men’s side, Akron stopper David Meves is setting the pace with a 0.21 GAA and .920 save percentage. He’s also led an undefeated start for the No. 2 Zips which is his most telling statistic.
TopDrawer jinx: Sigh. Following stories about Connecticut keeper Josh Ford and Ohio State midfielder Austin McAnena over the last two weeks both players saw their teams lose games that dropped them three spots in our Tournament Ranking. Sorry guys.

Upset of the week: Weren’t the Tulsa men like No. 2 a couple of weeks back? Seems like a long time ago now. The Golden Hurricane fell to South Carolina 1-0 on Saturday, which truthfully isn’t that big an upset as the Gamecocks are quickly coming up the rear, but we highlight the defeat more to show how Tulsa is heading in the wrong direction. We’re streaking!: The No. 33 Hofstra women lost their first match of the season, 5-0 to Boston College, and have not lost since.
