Longwood Battles For 2-2 Overtime Tie At George Mason
September 11, 2011
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Longwood University battled for a 2-2 women’s soccer double-overtime tie on the road at in-state school George Mason University of the Colonial Athletic Association Sunday afternoon in Fairfax. Senior captain Kacie Oliver| Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) scored both goals for the visiting Lancers (2-3-3) against the host Patriots (0-3-2) on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, finding the net in both the 11th (ironically) and 83rd minutes of the contest. It was the program’s fifth-straight overtime match, and sixth OT contest in eight matches this year. Longwood will play again on Friday night, September 16, hosting in-state opponent Radford University of the Big South Conference at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is FREE.
Longwood took an early 1-0 advantage as Oliver tallied her first goal at 10:30 on a corner kick opportunity during which she took the kick and tapped the ball in play to sophomore Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) who returned it to Oliver for a successful shot to the upper right of the net. George Mason tied it at 1-1 on a goal at 23:06 on a free kick that was booted around in the box before Tiana Kallenberger scored with an assist from Zoe Doherty. It remained 1-1 at the intermission before the Patriots took a 2-1 lead at 61:41 when Kallenberger took a cross pass from Nicole Clark and one-timed it for the go-ahead goal. Oliver notched her second goal of the match, and third goal in two matches, at 82:25 with an unassisted shot from about 20 yards to the far side of the net for the equalizer. Each team had a shot on-goal during the first 10-minute OT, both saved by the respective keepers, while each team had an off-target attempt during the second extra period.
“Our fifth overtime game in-a-row, we wouldn’t have it any other way” said 18th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “We defended well, and we had to defend a lot against a good team from a very strong soccer conference. It just came down to goals, and Kacie Oliver scored two goals today that were highlight-reel material -- just incredible finishes. We’re happy for her, and we’re happy for the team.”
George Mason took a 20-12 advantage in shots during the contest, though it was just a 6-5 edge in attempts on-goal, while the Patriots had a 6-3 lead on corner kicks. Oliver had four shots, two on-goal, to lead Longwood, while junior captain Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) took two shots, both on-goal. Junior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) started and played the first 72:10 in front of the net for the Lancers with three saves and two goals allowed. Sophomore goalie Shelby Hall|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) entered and played the final 37:50 in goal for the Lancers with the one late and key important stop. It was Hall’s first collegiate action.
Kallenberger had five shots, two on-goal, to lead George Mason, while Mary Kate Lowry had four shots and Jazmin Cardoso had three shots, two on-goal. Alex Bodenschatz played the first half (45:00) in goal for the Patriots with two saves and one goal allowed, and Lyndse Hokanson played the second half and overtime (65:00) for GMU with one save and one goal allowed.
Longwood is now 1-0-1 all-time versus George Mason, including a 1-0 double-overtime home win during 2008.
