Longwood Earns Road Shutout At Gardner-Webb
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond scored two goals, including the 11th game-winning goal of her career, to lead Longwood University to a 3-0 Big South Conference women’s soccer victory at Gardner-Webb University on Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake also scored a goal, while juniors Kelsey McDonald/Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and Rebecca Soares/Virginia Beach, along with freshman Christina Corbin/Glen Allen each contributed assists for the visiting Lancers (6-6-2, 5-1 Big South). Graduate student and goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville made two saves for the shutout against the host Bulldogs (3-10-1, 1-5 Big South). Longwood will play on the road again at Big South opponent Presbyterian College on Wednesday, October 16 at 7 p.m. in Clinton, South Carolina.
“Give a lot of credit to Gardner-Webb,” said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “They had a game plan, got numbers behind the ball and were very disciplined defensively the entire first half. At the half, we collected ourselves and came out with more urgency in the attacking half of the field. Still it took a loose ball off of a set piece to break them down. That first goal helped us relax and settle into the game. We were fortunate to add a couple more goals and earn a solid result on the road.”
Longwood and Gardner-Webb were scoreless at the intermission before Pardue found the back of the net at 47:15 when she re-directed a ball played into the box by McDonald from the right side of the field. Phillips made it 2-0 with her second goal of the season at 56:21, beating the keeper to the right side after Soares got free down the sideline and played a nice pass into box for Phillips. Pardue scored her second goal of the contest, and fifth of the season, at 65:57 when she beat the keeper 1v1 from close range after taking a pass from Corbin. McDonald’s assist was her second of the season, while Soares and Corbin each had their first assist this fall, also the first of Corbin’s career.
Longwood had a 22-8 advantage in shots, including 9-2 in attempts on goal, while the Lancers had a 5-3 edge on corner kicks. Pardue had nine shots, four on goal, and Phillips had four shots, two on goal. Hall played the duration in front of the net with the two saves for her sixth shutout this season.
Justine Ibarra had two shots, one on goal, for Gardner-Webb, while Amy Schmitt played the duration with six saves for the Bulldogs. GWU will play at Radford on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
Longwood and Gardner-Webb were meeting for the fourth time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Lancers lead the series, 3-1.
