Longwood earns road win at Winthrop 3-0
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond and freshman Amanda Spencer/Gibsonia, Pennsylvania scored first-half goals to lead Longwood University to a 3-0 Big South Conference women's soccer victory on the road at Winthrop University on Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Junior Kelsey McDonald/Kennett Square, Pennsylvania had an assist for the visiting Lancers (3-5-2, 2-0 Big South), who also were recipients of an own goal, while graduate student Shelby Hall/Purcellville made four saves for the shutout against the host Eagles (5-2-1, 1-1 Big South). Longwood will play at Big South opponent and in-state school VMI on Wednesday, October 2 at 4 p.m. in Lexington.
"We got off to a fast start today and that's critical against a team like Winthrop, especially on their home field," said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93. "Defensively, we were solid and able to pressure them at various times in the game. Offensively, our movement off of the ball created a lot of space and attacking opportunities. Overall, just a solid team effort."
Longwood jumped ahead early with a pair of goals within just over two minutes of each other when Spencer scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season at 13:05, followed by the second goal of the season scored by Pardue at 15:09. Spencer tallied unassisted with a shot from inside the box off a cleared corner kick. Pardue scored on a deflection attempt with an assist from McDonald, who had shot first, as the Lancers led 2-0 at the intermission. The visitors lead increased to 3-0 with an own goal about midway through the second half at 64:05. The Longwood defense and Hall did the rest as the team posted its fourth shutout, and second-straight in conference action.
Longwood had a 22-8 advantage in shots, including 12-4 in attempts on goal, and the Lancers led 9-3 on corner kicks. McDonald and Spencer each had four shots, two on goal for McDonald and one on target for Spencer, while freshman Gina D'Orazio/Moseley and sophomore Olivia Colella/Herndon each had three shots, two attempts each on goal. Hall played the duration in front of the net with the four saves for her fourth shutout this season.
Krystyna Frida, last year's Big South Attacking Player of the Year and this year's preseason league Attacking Player of the Year, had two shots, one on goal for Winthrop, while keeper Amelia Henderson also played the duration with nine saves for the Eagles, who play at High Point on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
Longwood and Winthrop were meeting for just the second time in the sport of women's soccer, and the Lancers lead the series, 2-0.
