Longwood Edges Tennessee Tech In Overtime 2-1
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an exciting 2-1 women’s soccer overtime victory past Tennessee Tech University of the Ohio Valley Conference Friday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Senior captain Kacie Oliver|Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 99th minute for the Lancers (2-3-2), while sophomore Kelsay Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) added the first goal in the 62nd minute against the visiting Golden Eagles (2-4-1). Longwood will play again on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 11, on the road at in-state opponent George Mason University of the Colonial Athletic Association in Fairfax beginning at 2 p.m.
Oliver calmly placed her PK attempt to the upper 90 of the left-side of the net with just 1:18 remaining in the first 10-minute OT period for Longwood. The decisive PK was awarded after a foul in the box when a Tennessee Tech player pulled a Lancer to the ground at 98:42. It ended the fourth consecutive overtime match for the hosts, and stopped a four-match winless streak that included a tie among three recent setbacks.
Longwood had completely controlled the first 45 minutes (12-3 shot advantage) only to go to the locker-room tied at 0-0. The Lancers finally scored at 61:52 when Pardue made her way through traffic before blasting a shot from the top-right side of the box into the lower left corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage. Tennessee Tech, however, tied the match at 1-1 with a goal by Chelsea Ladd at 74:20, collecting a loose ball in front of the net and knocking it back into an empty net. It came on a corner kick that saw the Lancers’ keeper come out on the kick before another shot was attempted and saved by a defender only for the ball to be booted around before Ladd was able to convert the game-tying goal.
“I’m starting to think this team likes the drama and suspense of overtime games -- that’s four in-a-row,” said head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “It feels good to be on the winning end of things; I can certainly sympathize with Tennessee Tech. I’m glad we got the result, and I think it was a fair result based on the box score. Kelsay Pardue scored a spectacular goal, and Kacie Oliver stepped up in a pressure situation and won the game for us with a PK. A lot of girls battled for us tonight on-and-off the field in order for us to get a victory in a tight game.”
Longwood took a 21-10 advantage in shots, including 11-5 in attempts on-goal, and the Lancers had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Pardue registered five shots, four on-goal, while redshirt-senior Alex Myers|Stafford (Colonial Forge) had four shots, two on-goal, Oliver had three shots, two on-goal, and junior captain Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) had three shots, one on-goal. Junior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the duration in front of the net for Longwood with three saves, and the Lancers had the one team stop.
Becca Toler played the duration for Tennessee Tech with nine saves, while Sarah Gawthrop had three shots, two on-goal, for the Golden Eagles. Longwood now leads the all-time series against Tennessee Tech at 2-0.
The match was played as part of the Longwood Wounded Warrior Weekend. A Memorial 5K run is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, at 9 a.m. on the High Bridge Trail that will start and finish behind the Historic Farmville Train Station, and the LW3 Benefit Soccer Game will take place Saturday at the Athletics Complex beginning at 5:30 p.m. It will feature a ‘Dream Team’ of military members, family and friends of Wounded Warriors, and family, friends, and comrades of Army Captain Shane Adcock, Marine Sergeant Donald Lamar, and Army Sergeant Andrew McConnell versus Longwood Faculty and Staff.
