Longwood Falls At UNC Wilmington 4-2
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Maddie McCormick scored two goals and added an assist to lead UNC Wilmington of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) to a 4-2 women's soccer victory past Longwood University on Sunday afternoon at the UNCW Courtyard Marriott Wilmington Invitational in North Carolina. Junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake and sophomore Olivia Colella/Herndon each had a goal for the visiting Lancers (1-4-2), while freshman Gina D'Orazio/Moseley contributed two assists against the host Seahawks (3-5). Longwood will welcome in-state opponent James Madison of the CAA on Sunday, September 22 at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.
"We scored two goals against a talented UNCW team on their home field," said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93. "The problem is that we're chasing the game from behind the entire second half. We have to be better defensively if we expect to do anything significant this year, and I think we have the players to do that. We just have to be sharper both mentally and physically on the defensive side of the ball in 1v1 situations and as a group."
Longwood and UNCW battled scoreless through the opening 45 minutes before the Seahawks got on the scoreboard first in the 48th minute when Katrina Guillou scored from inside the box with an assist from McCormick. The hosts made it 2-0 after the first goal by McCormick in the 52nd minute, unassisted, as the ball deflected off a defender. The Lancers closed to within 2-1 when Colella collected the rebound of a saved shot by D'Orazio and found the net in the 82nd minute. It was the first of three goals scored within 44-seconds by the two teams, as McCormick tallied another unassisted goal only 32-seconds after the Colella goal for a 3-1 lead, and Phillips scored for the visitors just 12-seconds later, assisted by D'Orazio on a cross into the box to make it 3-2. UNCW finished it off with a goal from Stephanie Bronson in the 86th minute, assisted by Carolina McClain -- capping a combined four goals scored by the two squads during a span of 3:45 late in the match.
UNCW had a 20-13 edge in shots, though it was 7-7 in attempts on goal, and the Seahawks led 6-3 on corner kicks. Senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond had four shots, one on goal, and D'Orazio had three shots, two on goal for Longwood. Graduate goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville played the duration in front of the net with three saves for the Lancers.
D'Orazio and freshman Amanda Spencer/Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, who scored three goals against Elon on Friday, each were named to the UNCW Courtyard Marriott Wilmington Invitational All-Tournament Team.
UNCW was led by Guillou with six shots, two on target, and McCormick had five shots, two on target. Lissu Rahkola played the duration with five saves for the Seahawks.
Longwood and UNC Wilmington were playing for the first time since 2008, and only for the second time ever, as the Seahawks have a 2-0 lead in the young series.
