Longwood Falls In Double-OT On Road At Morehead State 3-2
October 30, 2011
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-2 double-overtime decision on the road at Morehead State University of the Ohio Valley Conference Sunday afternoon in Morehead, Kentucky. Junior captain Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) and freshman Kelsey McDonald|Kennett Square, Pa. (Unionville) each scored goals for the Lancers (6-7-4) against the host Eagles (7-7-3). It was a program-record eighth overtime match this season for Longwood who will play its final contest next Sunday, October 30, at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina beginning at 3 p.m.
Longwood fell behind early when Brittany MacLennan scored for Morehead State just 2:04 into the match, assisted by Stephanie Gildehaus on a corner kick opportunity. The Lancers, however, answered quickly as Ottavio scored just 50-seconds later on a breakaway that she finished into the right corner. It remained 1-1 at the intermission before the Eagles went ahead again when Jillian Birchmeier scored at 56:21, assisted by Ali Hawksford. Longwood was able to tie it again at 2-2 after McDonald received a nice through ball pass from freshman Rebecca Soares|Virginia Beach (Kempsville) and placed it into the bottom right corner of the net to send the match to extra periods.
Morehead State managed two shots on target during the first 10-minute OT, but Longwood sophomore keeper Shelby Hall|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) stopped both attempts to force the second OT. Unfortunately, the Eagles scored the game-winner at 103:53 as Caity Fox was successful on a header to the upper right corner from a long throw in by MacLennan.
“It''s a tough result to deal with considering how hard our team had to play with back-to-back double-overtime games this weekend,” said veteran 18th-year head coach Todd Dyer ''93. “We showed a lot of character by fighting our way back into the game on two occasions but it still wasn''t quite enough. We defended well in the flow of play against a team that was very direct. Even so, they scored on a corner and a long throw so we have to be better in those areas for the future.”
Morehead State took a 25-7 advantage in shots, though only 11-4 in attempts on-goal, and the Eagles had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. McDonald registered three shots, two on-goal, and Ottavio had one shot on-goal to lead Longwood. Hall played the duration for the Lancers with a career-high eight saves.
MacLennan had four shots, two on-goal to lead Morehead State, while Sam Toepfer added three shots, one on-goal. Keeper Katie Blevins played the duration for the Eagles with two saves. Longwood and MSU were playing for the second time in the sport of women''s soccer as the young series stands at 2-0 in favor of the Eagles who also won last year''s match in Farmville 4-1.
