Longwood Falls To Visiting Charleston Southern 3-2
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-2 women’s soccer decision to visiting Charleston Southern University of the Big South Conference Friday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Senior captain Kacie Oliver|Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) and junior Nikki Glisson|Mechanicsville (Hanover) each scored goals for the Lancers (3-5-3), but it was not enough against the Lady Bucs (5-3-0) as Toni Lashley scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 85th minute. Longwood will play again on Sunday afternoon, September 25, welcoming South Carolina State University of the Great West Conference to the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m.
Charleston Southern took an early 1-0 advantage just over a minute into the match with a goal from Morgann Wood at 1:19 when she collected a loose ball at the top of the box and shot to the upper left corner of the net. The Lady Bucs added another goal at 39:00 as Gina Thomas gathered yet another loose ball in the box and beat the keeper with a low shot to the left post again, and a 2-0 lead at the intermission. Longwood seemed to play with more urgency to start the second half and quickly took control of the action, taking nine unanswered shots within a span of 11:20 early in the period, including its first goal in the 56th minute by Oliver who had gained a rebound ball in front of the net and slipped it into the net on the left side. Unfortunately, only three of the other shots were on target and all were saved by the keeper. CSU scored the eventual game-winner at 84:52 when Lashley blasted a hard shot in the box following a corner kick that deflected off a defender into the back of the net. The Lancers, however, made it interesting with a late goal in the 88th minute when Glisson took a nice pass from senior Mackenzie King|Stafford (North Stafford) and one-touched the ball over the keeper’s head into the net.
“Our effort and quality of play was a lot better in the second half on both sides of the ball,” said veteran 18th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “We just dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half with some casual defending, and we couldn’t quite capitalize on chances that we created. We fought back all the way to the end, but it just wasn’t enough.”
Longwood took a 20-11 advantage in shots, though just 7-6 in attempts on-goal, and the Lancers had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Glisson registered six shots, three on-goal, while Oliver had five shots, two on-goal, and sophomore Kelsey Pardue| Henrico (Hermitage) added three shots, one on-goal. Junior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the first half (45:00) in front of the net for Longwood with two saves, and sophomore Shelby Hall|Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) played the second half (45:00) in goal for the Lancers with one save.
Amy Arroyo played the duration for Charleston Southern with five saves, while Allison Lewis had three shots, one on-goal, for the Lady Bucs. The eight-match series between Longwood and Charleston Southern is now tied at 4-4 all-time.
