Longwood Ties In Double-OT At Radford 0-0
RADFORD, Va. -- Longwood University battled to a double-overtime scoreless decision in Big South Conference women's soccer action on Thursday night, finishing 110 minutes tied at 0-0 on the road at first-place Radford University in Radford. Senior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) gained the shutout in front of the net for the Lancers (11-5-1, 6-2-1 Big South) against the in-state Highlanders (10-2-3, 6-0-3 Big South). Longwood will play again on Saturday evening, October 20, in its final regular-season home match against in-state school and Big South opponent VMI at the Athletics Complex in Farmville at 6 p.m. It will be Senior Night with a special pre-game recognition ceremony.
“That was probably our grittiest performance of the season thus far and we needed it against a very strong Radford team,” said 19th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93. “We created several good chances to win the game, but their keeper was rock-solid and kept us out.”
Longwood and Radford, tied for first place in the Big South entering the contest, battled through a scoreless opening period. The Lancers, however, did have a 7-3 edge in shots at the intermission. The two teams continued their scoreless match through the second 45 minutes too, and regulation ended with the visitors enjoying a 21-11 advantage in shots. Each team had a late scoring opportunity in regulation, but could not move the net. Longwood and the Highlanders played for two additional 10-minute overtime periods with no goals, either. Neither team had a good look in the first extra period, but RU had an opportunity early in the second OT that was stopped, and the Lancers nearly scored in the final seconds.
Longwood had a 27-19 advantage in shots, though only 6-5 in attempts on goal, and the Lancers led 10-6 on corner kicks. Junior Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) had five shots, three on goal, and senior Nikki Glisson|Mechanicsville (Hanover) had four shots, one on goal, while Byron played the duration in front for the Lancers with five saves en route to the team's eighth shutout this season and the 14th shutout of her career to rank fourth all-time.
Mary Wiley had four shots, one on goal, for Radford, while Che’ Brown played the duration with six saves en route to her shutout for the Highlanders.
Longwood and Radford were playing for the 10th time in the sport of women's soccer, and the Lancers continue to lead the series, 6-3-1.
Longwood has attained its highest win total since 2006 (11-5-3), and continues to enjoy its finest season since 2002 (15-3-1). On Saturday, the Lancers will honor seniors Kyra Byron, Nikki Glisson, Natalie Massey, Lindsey Ottavio and Chelsea Walter.
