Longwood Tops Coastal Carolina 1-0 In 2OT
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime to lead Longwood University to a 1-0 Big South Conference women’s soccer victory past Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Pardue tallied the lone goal of the match at 105:17 for the Lancers (2-5-2, 1-0 Big South), while graduate goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville had two saves for the shutout against the visiting Chanticleers (3-5-1, 0-1 Big South). Longwood will play at Big South opponent Winthrop University on Saturday, September 28 at 1 p.m. in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
“Against a team like Coastal, it’s always going to be a grind like that,” said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “The key in a game like that is to stay disciplined defensively and then finish your chance when it comes. Fortunately, Pardue was the player on the ball for us in that critical moment and she did the job for us and the team got to experience a very emotional win.”
The decisive goal by Pardue came midway through the second 10-minute overtime period when she collected a loose ball near midfield and dribbled down the right side of the field past a defender and into the box before placing her shot successfully past the keeper to the lower left side of the net. It was her first goal of the season, and the 10th game-winner of her outstanding career, setting off a wild celebration by her teammates and the 200-plus fans in attendance.
Longwood and Coastal Carolina had battled evenly throughout the well-played, though physical league contest. Each team had two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, as Hall and the Chanticleers’ keeper, Megan Spencer, stopped the respective attempts. The Lancers placed two more shots on target in the second half of regulation, the best opportunity coming late, in the 86th minute, by freshman Amanda Spencer/Gibsonia, Pennsylvania from near point-blank range, but was saved again by CCU’s Spencer. The first extra period included a corner kick by the hosts, while the visitors’ Fia Jonsson, last year’s Big South Freshman of the Year, managed an early shot in the second OT that was blocked to set the stage for Pardue’s heroics.
Longwood had an 11-7 advantage in shots, including 5-2 in attempts on goal, and the Lancers led 6-0 on corner kicks. Pardue and Spencer each had two shots, both on goal, while freshman Gina D’Orazio/Moseley also had two shots, one attempt on goal. Hall played the duration in front of the net with the two saves for her third shutout this season.
Jonsson had four shots, one on goal for CCU, while Spencer also played the duration with four saves for the Chanticleers, who will host VMI on Friday, Sept. 27.
Longwood and CCU were meeting for the seventh time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Chanticleers still lead the series, 5-2.
