Longwood Wins At UNC Asheville 4-0
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Junior Kelsey McDonald/Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, sophomore Lilly Payne/Alexandria along with freshmen Gina D’Orazio/Moseley and Amanda Spencer/Gibsonia, Pennsylvania each scored goals to lead Longwood University to a 4-0 Big South Conference women’s soccer victory at UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon in North Carolina. Senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond along with sophomores Katie Beebe/Round Hill and Olivia Colella/Herndon each added assists for the visiting Lancers (9-7-2, 8-2 Big South) against the host Bulldogs (6-10-2, 2-6-2 Big South). Longwood returns home to play its final regular season match against Big South opponent and nearby in-state rival Liberty University on Tuesday night, October 29 at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville during Senior Night.
“It was a great team effort and result for us today,” said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “UNC Asheville was tough to break down and didn’t give us a lot of space to operate in. In fact, it took a piece of luck on that first goal by Mac (Kelsey McDonald) to open up the game for us. We scored some goals, earned a shutout and a lot of our girls got to play, so it was a very productive day.”
Longwood took a 1-0 advantage about midway through the first period when McDonald found the net at 23:30 with a shot from the right side of the box, assisted by Beebe. It was the second goal of the season by McDonald, while the first career assist for Beebe. The Lancers made it 2-0 after Spencer tallied the ninth goal of her collegiate career at 25:49, a blast from about 10 yards after Pardue found her open in the box. It was 2-0 at the intermission, as Pardue had her third assist of the season and the 22nd of her career, tied for first all-time.
Longwood increased its margin to 3-0 early in the second period when D’Orazio scored her third goal of the season with a successful shot from near point-blank range at 47:54, assisted by Colella, her second of the season. The Lancers added a late goal at 88:28 on a breakaway score by Payne, the first goal of her collegiate career.
Longwood had an 18-11 advantage in shots for the match, including 8-6 in attempts on goal, and it was 3-3 on corner kicks. Pardue had five shots, one on goal for the Lancers, while Spencer and junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake each had four shots, two on goal. Graduate student and goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville played the first 79:30 in front of the net with the six saves, while redshirt-junior Dana Wallace/Charlottesville played the final 10:30 in front of the net with no saves.
Shenny Lehhart had five shots, three on goal for UNC Asheville, while Heather Muller played the first 54:06 in front of the net with four saves and three goals allowed for the Bulldogs, and Suzie Zigante played the final 35:54 in front of the net with no saves and one goal allowed. UNC Asheville will play at Gardner-Webb on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.
Longwood and UNC Asheville were meeting for just the fourth time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Lancers have won each of the contests against the Bulldogs to lead the series, 4-0.
