Longwood Wins On Road At Presbyterian 2-0
October 16, 2013
CLINTON, S.C. -- Senior Kelsey Pardue/Richmond and junior Samantha Phillips/Chesapeake each scored second-half goals to lead visiting Longwood University to a 2-0 Big South Conference women’s soccer victory at Presbyterian College on Wednesday night in Clinton, South Carolina. Freshman Gina D’Orazio/Moseley added one assist for the Lancers (7-6-2, 6-1 Big South), who won their third-straight match, while graduate student and goalkeeper Shelby Hall/Purcellville made three saves for the shutout against the Blue Hose (6-7, 3-3 Big South). Longwood returns home to welcome Big South opponent Charleston Southern University on Saturday afternoon, October 19 at 2 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville during the school’s Wounded Warrior Weekend.
“PC is one of the most organized, disciplined and capable teams in this league that has our absolute respect and they were everything we thought they would be,” said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93. “We defended well for the most part, and at halftime, we just talked about doing more to help ourselves offensively and things seemed to change for the better in that area of the field to start the second half. Sam scored a great header from Gina on a nice attacking sequence and then Pardue just did her thing on top of the box for the second goal. This result was earned and something we can really build on moving forward.”
Longwood and Presbyterian were scoreless at the intermission before Phillips found the back of the net on a header attempt at 57:46, assisted by D’Orazio, for her third goal of the season and second in two matches. It was the team-best fifth assist of the season for D’Orazio. Pardue made it 2-0 with her third goal in two matches, and sixth of the season, at 60:42 when she beat the keeper with a left-footed shot from the top of the box to the lower left side.
Longwood had a 12-9 advantage in shots, including 5-3 in attempts on goal, while the Lancers had a 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Pardue had six shots, three on goal, to lead the way and Hall played the duration in front of the net with the three saves for second-straight shutout, fifth in the Big South and her seventh this season. The Longwood starting defensive back line continues its outstanding play, as well, led tonight by senior Chelsea Walter/South Riding, junior Kelsey McDonald/Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, along with sophomores Katie Beebe/Round Hill and Meghan Magee/Virginia Beach.
Kristen Peagler had two shots, one on goal, for Presbyterian, while Jordan Broadway played the first half in goal with one save for the Blue Hose and Sydney Fontenot played the second half with two saves and two goals allowed. PC will play at VMI on Oct. 19 at 12 p.m.
Longwood and Presbyterian were meeting for the fifth time in the sport of women’s soccer, and the Lancers have now won two-straight against the Blue Hose to tie the series, 2-2-1.
Wounded Warrior Weekend at Longwood will include the LW3 Benefit Soccer Game on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex, a Memorial 5K Walk/Run on Saturday at 9 a.m. on the High Bridge Trail along with the CSU match that will feature the Longwood ROTC program presenting the colors before the game and a special halftime recognition of the Wounded Warriors and their families in attendance.
