Lopes Come Up Short Against Lipscomb
The Grand Canyon University women's soccer team (1-6-1) fell, 1-0, to Lipscomb (6-4-1) Sunday at GCU Soccer Field in Canyon's final non-conference tilt of the season. The visiting Bisons scored in the 78th minute to edge the Antelopes in a hard-fought defensive battle.
"Another tough loss," said head coach Stevie Gill. "The girls didn't show up to play today and we started very flat. We played better in the second half but again made a fatal mistake at the back and Lipscomb punished us."
The game remained scoreless after the first 45 minutes of action, as Canyon fired six first half shots. Cassie Beckwith led the offensive attack in the opening period, tallying two shots, with one of those being on goal. Shannon Costello and Patricia Pape also put one shot on goal each in the first half.
Junior keeper Daryl Bradley made four opening half saves to eliminate the visitors from getting on the scoreboard.
GCU held the upper hand in the shots category in the second half, outshooting Lipscomb 9-7.
The teams remained knotted at 0-0 for much of the second half until Lipscomb's Baylee Linnell found the back of the net in the 78th minute to give Lipscomb the 1-0 advantage. The Lopes continued to apply offensive pressure but were unable to score the equalizer, falling 0-1.
Taylor Layton, Chelsea Santos and Sirena Seymour recorded three shots in the matinee, with Santos putting two of those on goal, while Layton put one on target.
Bradley finished with seven saves in net for Grand Canyon in her second start of the season.
"We missed a number of key players today and that completely changes the dynamics of the team," added Gill. "We need to work harder closing people down and taking our chances in the attacking third."
The Lopes will open Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play next Saturday when they host Bakersfield at GCU Soccer Field. The conference opener is slated to get underway at 7 p.m. Fans can find more information on the women's soccer season at www.gculopes.com.
