Louisville Wins Fifth Straight Against USF
Senior Charlyn Corral scored a goal and dished out an assist to lead the Cardinals to a 3-0 win over USF on Friday night in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals have won five straight games, improving to 5-0-0 in American Athletic Conference play and 9-3-1 overall. USF falls to 2-2-0 in league play and 7-3-3 overall.
“I am very happy to get the win against a very exceptional team,” said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. “South Florida is a great team and in all honesty we were on our heels in the second half and they were absolutely the better team in the second half. It is kind of ironic that we scored two goals in the run of play. But we figured it out and we kept on persevering and were able to get those two goals, which ultimately was the deciding factor. It was a great team performance.”
The Cardinals took an early lead in the ninth minute when Shannon Dennehey sent a cross into the penalty box to Corral. Corral sent the shot to the back of the net for her 12th goal of the season. The Cardinals finished the first half with a 4-3 shot advantage and a 3-0 corner kick advantage.
USF came out and applied offensive pressure early in the second half. The Bulls had three shots in the first three minutes, looking for the equalizer. In the 75th minute, Corral got free on a breakaway and sent a cross inside the box to Christine Exeter who fired a shot to the back of the net for a 2-0 Louisville lead. Two minutes later Erin Yenney headed a pass from Kari Weinland in for a 3-0 lead.
USF had seven shots in the second half to finish with a 9-8 shot advantage. Louisville finished the game with a 6-1 corner kick advantage. Brown finished with two saves while USF’s Christiane Endler finished with two saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 13 against UCF in Cardinal Park at 1:00 p.m. Sunday’s match will be Senior Day.
