Loye flirts with hat trick; MT shuts out TTU
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After beating Tennessee Friday evening, the Middle Tennessee soccer team (2-3-2) completed the weekend sweep against in-state foes with a convincing 3-0 shutout of Tennessee Tech (1-6-0) Sunday evening at Hayes Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore Kate Loye came up big for the Blue Raiders, recording five points on the night and it all started in the ninth minute, when she found Tori Hawkins on a breakaway inside the box. Hawkins then netted the first of goal of the contest and her first of the season. The goal marked the second-straight time that MT has scored the game-winner within the first 10 minutes of the match.
The sophomore duo connected again just three minutes later as Loye headed in a pass from Hawkins in the middle of the box, giving Middle Tennessee a 2-0 lead in the 12th minute.
The first period proved to be the most exciting with Loye proceeding to display some fancy footwork to create her own shot as the New Zealand sensation netted her second goal of the match and third on the season in the 26th minute.
During the 80th minute, Loye had a shot at her third goal of the match in a one-on-one situation, but Tennessee Tech goalkeeper Jordan Brown had other ideas. Brown collected Loye’s hot for her fourth and final save of the contest, preventing the hat trick.
Blue Raider goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer didn’t see much action between the pipes tonight, despite playing a full 90 minutes. She snagged one save, which came during the second period for her fourth shutout of the season. Brown, on the other hand, had four saves for the Golden Eagles.
MT dominated the contest offensively, outshooting TTU 17-6 with seven on goal compared to one. Loye led the Blue Raiders with four shots and three on goal, while Amalie Anderdal had three shots. Katie Phillips recorded Tennessee Tech’s one shot on goal. The corner kick contest was a draw as each team had two.
The Blue Raiders return to action Friday, Sept. 20, hosting Alabama A&M at 7 p.m. to close out nonconference play.
