Loyola Drops 1-0 Decision To Detroit
Oct. 9, 2011
CHICAGO – The Loyola University Chicago women’s soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to conference foe Detroit on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9) at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers (4-8-3) showed precision and endurance in their fight to keep the Titans (11-4-1) scoreless in the first half, but a goal in the 69th minute was enough to give Detroit the win.
“We got caught on a counterattack. Because we were pushed up for one of our corner kicks we didn’t have balance in the back. They exposed us and their player did a good job,” said head coach Barry Bimbi.
Detroit’s Kaitlyn Quarrell scored the lone goal of the match when she carried the ball up from the midfield, working around a broken backline, and launched a shot to the upper left corner of the net past the Rambler keeper.
Despite trailing 1-0, the Ramblers gave a great effort, never giving up the fight and continuing their recent on-target offensive performances with four of six shots on goal. Freshman Sammy Gage led the effort with two shots on goal while senior Lauren Ostarello tallied two shots, one on goal. Allison Rydberg and Tricia Stonebraker added the final two attempts with one shot apiece.
Detroit finished with the 8-6 advantage in shots and 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
“We had multiple chances today. Lauren Ostarello had a great shot in the first half that their keeper saved. Throughout the whole match, our team still had the fight,” Bimbi said. “Overall, I think we had a great game so it is a bit disappointing to get the loss.”
Monica Gonyo worked in between the pipes as starting goalkeeper. She collected three saves and moved to a 4-5-2 record win the loss.
After a weeklong break, Loyola will be back in action on Oct. 15. The team will travel to Dayton, Ohio for a Horizon League match against Wright State, set to begin at 6:00 p.m. CST.
