Loyola Ends Scoring Drought, Ties Cleveland State, 1-1
Sept. 30, 2011
CLEVELAND, Ohio – After struggling on offense the past few weeks, the Loyola women’s soccer team bounced back tonight against Cleveland State to break a six-game scoring drought. And they bounced back in a big way. Despite an early goal by the Vikings, the Ramblers stayed strong and energized throughout the entire match, notching 17 total shots, 10 shots on goal, and scoring late in the second half to force the match into overtime for the eventual 1-1 draw.
In the 29th minute, Taylor Vidovic found clearance to give the Vikings the first goal. Lynsay Strahorn started the offensive push with an attempt from within the box. The shot was blocked by Monica Gonyo in goal and bounced back into play to give Vidovic the open net.
Kristin Papierski tallied her first goal of the season at the 72:42 minute mark to pocket the equalizer. Papierski scored on a one-touch shot off of a pass from Monika Lee in the left of the box.
The team played until the final seconds of the match. In both overtime periods, Loyola fired last-minute shots to chase the win. Maggie Olsen attacked with a header from a corner kick at 98:58 in the first extra stage while Valerie Gonyo
Freshman Allison Rydberg finished with three shots to lead the Ramblers on offense. Senior Lauren Ostarello and sophomore Alex Brown each tallied two shots on goal while Ana Claudia Michelini and Jessie Hubly also tallied two shots. The rest of Loyola’s opportunities were spread throughout the entire roster, as 11 of 13 players to see action on the pitch notched at least one attempt. Loyola held the advantage in shots (17-13), shots on goal (11-9), and corner kicks (7-1).
Monica Gonyo played between the posts for the Ramblers to collect eight saves in 110:00 minutes of play and move to 4-4 on the season. Loyola’s defense also pressured to force the Vikings offsides four times.
Loyola returns home on Sunday, Oct. 2 to host the Indiana State Sycamores in an afternoon match beginning at 1:00 p.m. CST at Loyola Soccer Park.
