Loyola Settle For Scoreless Draw In Green Bay
Oct. 5, 2011
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Loyola women’s soccer team settled for a scoreless draw after stretching into double overtime against Green Bay tonight. The Ramblers played the Phoenix to an even contest where Loyola finished with a slight 8-7 advantage in shots and Green Bay finished with the slim 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
After a relatively slow first half, Loyola came out after intermission and stepped up its offensive attack. The Ramblers tallied five total shots in the period including bullets from Ana Claudia Michelini and Allison Rydberg right out of the gate.
Freshman Sammy Gage had the final two attempts for the Ramblers in search of the game-winner. In the 87th minute, she sent a shot on target in effort to avoid the overtime stretch. She followed with another blast five minutes into the first overtime period for the single Rambler try in extra time.
The quadruple band of defenders Valerie Gonyo, Jessie Hubly, Moriah Schwarz, and Chelsie Stokes, continued their superior play on the backline to help goalkeeper Monica Gonyo secure the shutout. Their efforts included three offsides traps, two blocks, and four off-target shots, to limit threatening traffic by the net.
Gage and fellow freshman Monika Lee each finished with two shots on goal to lead the Ramblers on offense. Hubly, Rydberg, Michelini, and Tricia Stonebraker added a shot apiece to the team total of eight shots on the match. As a whole, the team had near-perfect aim. Of the eight total shots, seven were on target.
The Ramblers return home to face Detroit on Sunday, Oct. 9. The team will play the Titans in an afternoon match set to begin at 1:00 p.m. CST.
