LU shuts out Southern in season opener
BEAUMONT, Texas – Kelso Peskin scored one goal and added two assists to power a balanced attack as the Lamar University Cardinals rolled to a 6-0 win over Southern University in the season opener for both teams at the LU Soccer Complex on Friday night.
Six players scored a goal for the Cardinals, who improved to 5-0 all-time vs. the Jaguars. Peskin, Lucy Ashworth, Laura Parra and Hailey Loupe each scored their first career goal for LU, while Samantha Moreno and Jordan Mulnix also tallied for LU.
“It’s good to see such a balanced attack,” LU coach Steve Holeman said. “We have a much deeper team than we did last season.”
The Cardinals scored all their goals in the first half, outshooting the Jaguars 19-1 in the first 45 minutes and 36-2 for the evening.
The Cardinals were able to empty their bench, with 23 players seeing action in the game.
“It’s big to be able to play so many players in the first game of a two-game weekend,” Holeman said. “They all came in and contributed.”
Ashworth opened the scoring 7:27 into the game, converting a pass from Peskin. Peskin and Moreno made it 3-0 before the game was 20 minutes old. Parra and Loupe scored in the latter stages of the first half to make it 5-0 before Mulnix closed out the scoring by bouncing one in off the crossbar with 31 seconds remaining in the first half.
Southern goalkeeper Kendra Lewis did her best to keep the Jaguars in the game, making 14 saves, several of them of the spectacular variety. LU goalkeeper Lauren Lovejoy needed just one save for her third career shutout.
“I was very pleased with the way we played,” Holeman said. “Give their goalkeeper some credit, she made some great saves. I was also happy with the way we played defensively.”
The Cardinals return home to host the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns at 6 p.m. Sunday. The first 100 fans will receive a free serving of Kona Ice. There will be a postgame autograph session. For tickets, visit www.LamarCardinals.com. Tickets will be available at the LU Soccer Complex one hour prior to kickoff.
