Lucatorto Big in Warhawks' 2OT Tie
Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) scored two goals and Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East)made eight saves as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team finished in a 2-2 double-overtime tie with Luther College Wednesday night in Whitewater.
UW-W got on the board in the fifth minute when Hottsmith chased down a 50-50 ball, tipped it up in the air and headed it into the net for an early 1-0 Warhawk lead.
Lucatorto was impressive throughout the match making critical saves when the Warhawks needed him most. In the first half alone he made four saves, including a diving stop on a ball that was surely headed into the upper right corner in the 29th minute of play.
The Norse turned up the pressure in the second half and put Lucatorto to the test early and often. The Warhawk net minder made a diving stop in the 51st minute and another save in the 60th minute.
Luther tied the game in the 63rd minute after some nice passing led to a goal by Myles Norville, and then took a 2-1 lead five minutes later when the Norse's leading scorer Aidan O'Driscoll netted his third goal of the season.
As the half wore on Luther continued to maintain a majority of the possession. Natty Maynard, a senior forward for the Norse, had a one on one opportunity against Lucatorto, but he again made the save to keep UW-W in the game.
Hottsmith came through in the 87th minute scoring on a pass from Alex Whiteman (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The first overtime was heavily controlled by the Norse. A shot in the 97th minute was blocked and a header in the 98th minute was stopped by a Warhawk defenseman. With 18 seconds remaining, Lucatorto made a critical diving stop to force a second overtime.
Neither team got a good look at the goal in the final ten minutes, and the game finished in a tie.
The Warhawks, 1-1-2, will travel to Missouri for a pair of games this weekend. Friday the Warhawks will face Westminster College at 7 p.m. in Fulton, before heading to St. Louis on Sunday to play Webster University at 1 p.m.
