Luchini named National Player of the Week
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — After a very successful four-goal week on the pitch for Lehigh men's soccer this past week, sophomore forward Josh Luchini has been named National Player of the Week by the United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday and College Soccer News on Monday. This follows Luchini's third Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week nod, earned on Monday afternoon.
Luchini had his best offensive week to date, netting his first hat trick of his collegiate career on Saturday against Boston University, leading the Mountain Hawks to a 4-2 victory. Luchini scored goals in the 11th, 69th and 83rd minutes in Lehigh's come-from-behind victory to beat the Terriers. His second goal of the contest was the game-winning goal. On Tuesday against Penn, Luchini scored the game-winner in the 67th minute. Of his 10 total shots this week, eight of them were on goal and four were scores. Luchini now has eight goals on the year, surpassing his season total of six last season and has 14 for his career in his first 26 career games.
"It's both great and well deserved for Josh to receive national distinction for last week's performances," said head coach Dean Koski. "While this honor shines a light on Josh and Lehigh men's soccer, we will continue to stay focused on our team goals and objectives. Clearly Josh is helping us getting closer to achieving our goals."
In addition to his national honors earned on Tuesday, he was also named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week for his dual performances.
This is Luchini's first National Player of the Week honor of his career and the first time a Lehigh player has garnered weekly national attention since goalkeeper Ciaran Nugent in 2011.
Riding a three-game winning streak, Lehigh heads to Hamilton, N.Y. on Wednesday night to take on three-time defending Patriot League champion Colgate. The game will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network with coverage beginning at 7 p.m.
