M Soccer Earns NEC Tournament Berth, Explodes for Three Goals in 3-0 Win at LIU
The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team clinched its fourth-straight NEC Tournament berth with an offensive explosion as they defeated Long Island Saturday afternoon, 3-0, in Brooklyn, NY. The three goals are a season-high for the Knights as they concluded their regular season.
The Knights have now made 13 of the last 15 NEC Tournaments.
With the victory, FDU (10-4-3, 6-2-2 NEC) moves into second place in the NEC standings for the time being with 20 points. With conference matches still to be played on Sunday, the final standings will not be known until after the completion of the contests. LIU finishes its season with an overall record of 5-10-3 (3-6-1 NEC).
Junior #Antony Moore# started the scoring in the 38th minute of the first half with a goal from 10 yards out on a pass from fellow classmate and countryman #Jack McVey# who delivered him a pass 10 yards in front of the goal. The goal was the third of the season for Moore.
The Knights went into the half with a 1-0 lead, while outshooting LIU, 9-6.
Still clinging to a 1-0 lead, FDU put the game away with two goals in a span of three minutes in the second half. Moore found freshman #Miguel Escobar# on the left side in the 66th minute who scored his fourth goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Three minutes later, freshman #Nico Wright# delivered a cross to McVey who finished with his team-leading seventh goal of the season to extend the lead to 3-0 which they would never relinquish.
FDU dominated the second half offensively as they attempted 11 more shots to finish the game with 20. LIU managed only three in the second half to finish with nine. Eleven of the Knights’ shots were on goal.
Sophomore #Jacob Lissek# tied his career high by posting his fifth shutout of the season as he made three saves. Adam Janssen turned away eight shots for the Blackbirds.
"The guys really stepped up and responded in a big way today from the opening whistle to the final whistle," Head Coach #Seth Roland# said. "We were focused and sharp both offensively and defensively. Tonight and tomorrow we will savor the accomplishment of making the NEC Tournament, and then it’s back to work on Monday in preparation for Friday's semifinal."
NEC Tournament play will commence on Friday, Nov. 11. Please check back to www.fduknights.com for location and time of the Knights’ semifinal match.
