Mabiala nets OT winner for FMU in 3-2 win
FLORENCE, SC – Junior Gael Mabiala scored on a 17-yard shot with 5:29 left in the second overtime period to lift Francis Marion University to a 3-2 victory over the University of Mount Olive, Saturday night (Sept. 3) in non-conference men’s soccer action.
FMU remains unbeaten at 1-0-1 and will play at Barton College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Mount Olive drops to 0-1-0.
Mabiala took a pass from junior Tommy Kues, two-touched the ball to his left, and fired in the match winner.
The score came after Mount Olive freshman Dakotah Casale scored with 11.9 seconds left in regulation to knot the score at 2-2. The goal came after teammate Jonathan Alexandersson’s shot was saved by FMU sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes, but the rebound came to Casle for the tap-in goal.
FMU took a 1-0 advantage when sophomore Oliver Drakenhammar scored in the 13th minute. The sequence began with sophomore Levin Sandmann chesting the ball back to freshman Lee Northfield who chipped the ball over the Trojan backline to put Drakenhammar in 1v1 with the goal keeper. He slotted a 14-yard shot into the netting.
Mount Olive responded 5:42 into the second half with an unassisted score from Casale to tie the match at 1-1.
Drakenhammar again put the Patriots on top at 2-1 with a 12-yard tally at 66:48. Sandmann also assisted on the second score. Drakenhammar leads FMU with three goals in 2016.
Francis Marion outshot Mount Olive 18-13 and led 7-4 in corner kicks.
FMU junior goalkeeper Jordan Le Guyader played the overtime sessions to earn the win. He made one save while facing two shots. Mannes played the opening 90 minutes and registered three saves.
Nick Bernsdorf minded the net for Mount Olive and made three saves.
The Patriots had a potential match-winning score waived off in the first five minutes of overtime due to an offsides whistle.
