Mabiala’s goal earns Francis Marion 1-1 tie
FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore Gael Mabiala scored on a short shot in the 82nd minute and despite a large shot advantage Francis Marion University settled for a 1-1 deadlock with local-rival Coker College, Saturday evening (Sept. 5) in non-conference men’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (1-0-1) will play host to Barton College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Hartzler Field. The RIOT pep club will hold its first 2015 event at the match.
Trailing 1-0, Mabiala took a short pass from senior Sven Ricke and fired a 6-yard shot in the netting at the 82:00 mark. It was his second score of the young season and Ricke’s second assist.
Francis Marion held a 28-10 advantage in shots, and an 11-4 edge in corner kicks, but could not push across a winning score. The Patriots hit the woodwork three times in the 15 minutes leading up to the equalizing goal.
A bending 25-yard free kick by FMU’s Sindre Traaseth went just outside the left post in the first overtime session. In the second extra session, an attempt by Mabiala was stopped by Coker goalkeeper Kyndle Cobb in the 103rd minute. With 1:29 remaining, Patriot junior Peter Beniseau hit a sliding attempt from the right corner of the 18-yard box that deflected off a Cobra defender and forced a diving save by Cobb.
Aladdin Elfares gave the Cobras (0-0-1) a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when he touched in a long service from the left side by Jose Herencia.
Francis Marion freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Mannes recorded four saves, while Cobb finished with 12 stops.
The FMU defense allowed the Cobras only two shots over the final 78:20.
