Malkiewicz' Overtime Goal Lifts Pirates Past Mustangs, 1-0
DALLAS, Texas - Senior Amanda Malkiewicz scored her fourth goal of the season lifting East Carolina (7-6-1, 2-5) to a 1-0 overtime win over SMU (9-6-1, 5-2-1) Sunday afternoon at Wescott Field.
After both teams struggled to find the back of the net in regulation, ECU capitalized on a long through ball and a two-on-one to score the game's only goal with three seconds remaining in the first overtime period. With an SMU defender closing on the edge of the 18-yard box, junior Rachel Wechsler made a short pass to the left to Malkiewicz, who placed the ball just over a sliding Courtney Webb, for the game-winner. For Malkiewicz it was her 21st career goal moving her into a tie for fourth place on the Pirates all-time scoring list with Kelly Gray (1998-2001).
Sophomore keeper Christiane Cordero made four saves on the afternoon and recorded her fourth shutout of the season and sixth of her career. Her counterpart Courtney Webb also had four saves in goal.
"It was a gutsy performance by the team today," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "Everyone gave it their all! Christiane made some big saves and started the attack on the game-winning goal. Malkiewicz' effort on the goal was absolutely amazing."
Eight different Pirates posted a shot on the day with Beth Batchelor, Kimmy Cummings, Hali Oughton and Wechsler each recording two. Courtney Smith led three Mustangs with multiple shots posting three, one on goal.
The match was essentially a deadlock with the Pirates edging the Mustangs 12-11 in shots and 5-4 in shots on goal, though SMU held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
ECU will open its four-game final home stand of the year next Friday, Oct. 21 when it welcomes in Rice for a 7 p.m. tilt at the ECU Soccer Stadium.
