Manhattanville Scores Twice Last; Downs Drew
PURCHASE, N.Y. – Senior Morgan Rebollal (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and freshman Christie DeMarco (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream South) both scored in the final six minutes of regulation as the Manhattanville women's soccer team stormed back to pull off a 2-1 victory over Drew in an exciting non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at GoValiants.com Field.
The Valiants provided some late-game heroics to pull out the victory, as the two strikes came 3:56 apart to stun the Ranger side. After Drew had taken the lead in the 72nd minute, Manhattanville started to show some progress offensively and kept the ball in the offensive third looking for the equalizer.
The game-tying goal came soon after, as senior Brittney Smith (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) took a pass along the near side of the box and dribbled along the endline before putting the ball through the six-yard box. After it caromed off a few players, a Drew clearing attempt bounced right to Rebollal and she sent a volley into the top corner for her first goal of the year at 84:01.
Less than four minutes later, Manhattanville struck again to take the improbable lead. Rebollal started the play by feeding a ball to the near sideline for classmate Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School), whose cross bounced into the box onto the waiting foot of DeMarco, who slid to the ball and put it past Kim Jaikissoon for her second tally of the season.
Drew struck first at the 71:22 mark of the match, when Caroline Kuras put a cross across the goal mouth where it was bodied into an open net by Michelle Malone.
Manhattanville posted a 6-4 edge in total shots in the contest, including a 4-2 edge in shots on target. Freshman Grace Kraemer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made one save to improve to 3-3-0 on the year, while Jaikissoon made two saves but allowed the two late goals to fall to 3-3-0 for Drew.
Manhattanville (3-4-0) will look to keep the momentum going this weekend, as the Valiants travel to Farmingdale State on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match with their former Skyline Conference rival.
