Marauders, Raiders Play to a Draw
Millersville, Pa. – Freshman Kelsey Mattola scored in the 85th minute to send the game to extra time against Shippensburg. The Marauders and the Raiders were unable to find a winner as they ended in a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes Tuesday evening.
Shippensburg (3-2-3, 1-1-2 PSAC) and Millersville (3-2-1, 1-2-1 PSAC) played 63 minutes before a goal was scored. The Raiders took the lead late in regulation when Katie Leverentz fed teammate Brittany Hibshman to the right side of the box. Hibshman kicked the ball toward the left side, top shelf to beat Millersville’s goalkeeper Ashley Matyasich for a 1-0 lead.
Matyasich, in her second-straight start, made six saves including two key saves in extra time to keep the Marauders’ hopes alive.
In the 85th minute, Mattola picked up an erred Shippensburg pass at midfield and drove into the offensive zone. From 20 yards out, Mattola cued up a shot with defenders to each side and let it rip. The deep shot had a fast enough pace to beat the diving Raider goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1 with five minutes to play in regulation.
The Marauders dominated the first overtime, while Shippensburg controlled the second. Both teams were unable to find a game winner.
Millersville hits the road to take on Clarion Friday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. The Marauders then travel to Edinboro on Saturday to take on the Fighting Scots for a 1 p.m. start.
