Marchitto Lifts Falcons over Mount Ida 2-0
Junior Kelly Marchitto (West Haven, Conn.) scored two goals to lift the Albertus Magnus women’s soccer team over Mount Ida 2-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon at Celentano Field.
Marchitto, who registered her first goal of the year with the game winner, connected on a free kick in the 16th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Her second goal came in the 66th minute as she drilled a shot from about 20 yards out, which cleared the hands of Mount Ida’s leaping goalkeeper.
With their sixth win in seven games, the Falcons improve to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in GNAC play. Mount Ida falls to 1-5 and 2-7 in the conference standings.
Christina Dineson (Milford, Conn.) played all 90 minutes in net for the Falcons and faced just two shots, making both saves to improve her tally on the season to 31. With her second shutout of the year, Dineson’s goals against average has improved to 0.67.
Mount Ida’s Devan Meeker took the loss in net as she allowed two goals and made two stops for the Mustangs.
Marchitto had another great look in the 35th minute as her free kick was grabbed by Meeker by the near post. The junior tallied six shots in the match, including four on goal. Meghan Loughman (Trumbull, Conn.) almost extended the Falcons’ lead as well but her shot from 20 yards out in the 34th minute hit the cross bar and went out of play.
Albertus outshot the Mustangs 21-5 on the afternoon and allowed just two shots on net. Mount Ida did not record a shot until the 24th minute of the contest.
The Falcons will travel to Norwich University on Saturday, Oct. 1 to take on the Cadets in GNAC action. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. following the Albertus Magnus men’s soccer game versus Norwich at 1:00 p.m.
