Marist And Army Play To 1-1 Tie
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior Myles Ashong (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) scored in the 34th minute to give the Red Foxes (4-1-1) their lone goal of the match and a 1-1 tie with the Army Black Knights (2-1-3). Playing a man down for the final 12 minutes in regulation and the full 20 minutes in overtime, the Red Foxes played strong defensively to hold on to the tie.
Army opened the scoring with a shot outside the box by Nick Williams in the 30th minute but the Red Foxes quickly responded with a goal of their own just 4 minutes later. Brandon Curtis (Stony Point, N.Y.) recorded his first assist of the year with a cross into the box to set up Ashong’s goal. Curtis was later sent off in the 79th minute, as a result of his second yellow card, and the Red Foxes were forced to finish the game with only ten men.
“We wanted to come out with either a tie or a win, not settling for anything less,” said Ashong about the teams mindset exiting the locker at halftime. “We fought hard and being a man down for as long as we were I think we’ll take this result.”
Freshman goalkeeper Mark Rajovic (Katonah, N.Y.) came up big in the second half and overtime with three saves from eight Army shots. The Black Knights totaled 11 shots in the game while the Red Foxes tacked on seven of their own. The Red Foxes had the only two shots in the overtime periods.
“We had a couple of chances to win it in overtime,” said head coach Matt Viggiano. “We showed a lot of character, hopefully we’re building the right stuff to get into the MAAC’s and the top six.”
