Marist Late Goal Drops Iona At Mazzella
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Marist Red Foxes got a late game-winning score from Keri Bradley in the 87' to defeat the Maroon & Gold at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon, 2-1. Freshman Jackie Morris scored her first career goal for Iona in the loss.
The decisive strike came from Bradley with 86:07 on the clock. She turned toward the center from the left side and took a kick from 30 yards out that buried itself into the far right side netting. It's her second game-winning score, and third goal of the season.
Kristen Reilly got the Red Foxes on the board in the 28'. Her opportunity to score came after a lofted cross from Keri Bradley was missed by both a Marist attacker and Iona defender. Reilly lowered her head and was able to sneak it past sophomore Kelsie Kearns who was streaking into the frame.
Persistence from the Maroon & Gold resulted in a game-tying score in the 45'. Junior Madeleine Lessard entered a long ball into the box that forced Marist's keeper to leave her line. The Red Fox goalie misjudged the bounce as a result, Morris snuck behind her to bat home an empty-netter.
Before Bradley eventually had the game-winner, Marist threatened on numerous chances. At the 55' mark, Nicole Sasso had a header that had to be cleared off the goal line by freshman Taylor D'Alessandro. Six minutes later, Kristen Prevosto had a free kick that was rocketed off the cross bar.
Freshman Emma Havrilla had six saves in net for the Maroon & Gold. Abigail Renaud, who started the game for Marist, had four saves in the first half. Francesca Guzzo made one save in the second half.
Marist dominated the second half, outshooting the Gaels 8-1 over the final 45 minutes and 13-6 for the entire game. Freshman Faith Preziosi had a team-high two shots, both on goal. Graduate Christine Rebus, D'Alessandro, junior Ciara Guglielmo and Morris each had one.
The Red Foxes had the only two corner kick chances of the game.
Iona's next game is on the road against Quinnipiac on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Kick-off from Quinnipiac Soccer Stadium in Hamden, CT is set for 3 pm.
