Marist Men's Soccer Plays Monmouth To Draw
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Marist men’s soccer team (6-5-4, 2-3-2 MAAC) and the Monmouth Hawks (6-3-5, 2-1-4 MAAC) played to a scoreless draw in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Hesse Field on Saturday. With three conference games remaining the Red Foxes are three points outside the MAAC Championship bracket.
In a strong defensive matchup the game did not lack chances from either team. Monmouth hit a crossbar with a shot inside the box in the 14th minute while a shot from senior forward Myles Ashong (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) just two minutes into the second half was stopped by the right post.
The Hawks totaled 19 shots in the game to the Red Foxes 14, but Marist was more accurate with eight shots on goal to six from Monmouth.
Freshman goalkeeper Mark Rajovic (Katonah, N.Y.) for Marist and Eric Klenofsky for Monmouth both made key saves when called upon as both teams pressed forward and counter attacked often. Rajovic totaled six saves in the game while Klenofsky totaled seven.
Ashong totaled four shots in the game, three on goal and junior midfielder Steven Arraiano (Putnam Valley, N.Y) contributed with three shots, two on goal.
Tired legs got the best of both teams in the second half as the play slowed and more chances went wide but the effort was there between two teams fighting for important conference points.
The Red Foxes return home for a MAAC matchup with Niagara on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Tenney Stadium.
