Marist Snaps Siena’s Impressive Streaks
Marist scored twice just 1:59 apart in the final 6:28 to snap Siena Women’s Soccer’s four-match winning streak with a 2-0 decision in Poughkeepsie. Both the Saints’ defense and junior goalkeeper Taylor Dorado set new program team and individual shutout streaks of 513:27 prior to the Red Foxes’ two late strikes.
Katey Samarro and Nicole Sasso each scored for Marist (8-7-1, 6-2) which became the second team to clinch one of six available MAAC Tournament berths on Wednesday, joining two-time defending champion Monmouth. Abigail Renaud made four saves to record the shutout for the Red Foxes which snapped a seven-match winless streak (0-6-1) vs. Siena (7-7-3, 4-2-2) dating back to 2012.
Dorado made five saves for the Saints which saw their remarkable defensive streak come to an end as they suffered their first loss this month. The Siena defense and Dorado broke the previous program and individual shutout streaks of 504:23 by more than nine minutes, which were set by the 2015 MAAC Championship squad and Liz Rogan.
An evenly played match saw both teams attempt 11 shots apiece, while the Saints held a 6-3 advantage in corners.
But in the 83rd minute Marist broke through as Samarro roofed a shot from 25 yards out just under the crossbar, as Siena bequeathed its first goal in nearly three full weeks. The Red Foxes then put it away less than two minutes later when Sasso headed in a service off a free kick from Alexa Svensson. Prior to Marist’s two late goals, Siena had allowed just one goal total spanning their first 754 minutes of conference action.
Darby D’Angelo recorded a team-high three shots for Siena which remains tied for third place in the MAAC Standings with Niagara in points, albeit has a match in hand with the Purple Eagles.
The Saints return to the Capital Region for their final regular season home contest Saturday vs. Manhattan. Siena will honor its six-member senior class in a special ceremony just prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff.
