Marist Suffers First Loss of Season at NJIT
NEWARK, N.J. - A goal by NJIT freshman Shaun Keegan in the 76th minute handed the Marist men’s soccer team its first loss of the 2014 season, as the Red Foxes fell to the Highlanders 1-0. Marist is now 2-1-0 this season while NJIT evened its record at 2-2-0.
"We played really well in the second half and definitely deserved better," Head Coach Matt Viggiano said. "We got a bit unlucky but have to work just a little harder to make sure we bury our opportunities. We'll learn from this one and be better for it later in the season."
Keegan scored his first career goal off his own rebound at the 75:47 mark in what proved to be the game-winner.
Freshman goalkeeper Mark Rajovic (Katonah, N.Y.) made four saves and senior MJ Stellwag (Newburgh, N.Y.) had two of the Red Foxes’ three shots on goal in the contest.
The Highlanders outshot Marist 13-10. Sophomore Christian Foust stopped three shots in net for NJIT before freshman goalkeeper Max Bradhe played the last 4:42 of the game, making his collegiate debut.
The Red Foxes will play at Columbia at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 and travel to Sacred Heart to play the Pioneers at noon Sept. 13. Marist will return to Tenney Stadium on Sept. 16 to host Army at 7 p.m.
