Marlborough Posts Hat Trick in 8-1 Win
Morgan Marlborough's third career hat trick powered the Nebraska soccer team (2-2-1, 0-0-0) to a 8-1 win over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (0-5-0, 0-0-0) on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field. Marlborough put NU up 2-0 going into halftime before notching the 28th hat trick in Nebraska soccer history with an unassisted goal at 58:32 to put the Huskers up 4-0. Six Huskers scored goals on the day, including the first career goals for Bri Badje, Samantha Areman and Maddie Hanssler.
After not scoring a goal in the first two games of the season, Marlborough has now scored seven goals in Nebraska's last three games. The Lee's Summit, Mo., native started the year seventh on Nebraska's all-time goals chart with 39 goals over her first two seasons and has now moved to fifth on the all-time list with 46 goals. She is two goals away from tying Meghan Anderson for the No. 4 spot.
The Husker offense started attacking right out of the gate, but NAU goalie Lauren Weaver weathered the storm early with six first-half saves, as Marlborough's to goals were the only shots to find the back of the net. Nebraska broke the game wide open in the second half with six goals from six different players. The Huskers totaled 17 shots on goal for the day, while the Lumberjacks were only able to attack the Husker goal four times.
Stacy Bartels put the Huskers up 3-0 at 53:16 after Jordan Jackson pulled Weaver away from the net and then passed to ball to Bartels for an uncontested shot. Bartels has now score in two straight games and has three goals on the year.
Following Marlborough's hat trick, Jackson then got on the board with her fourth goal of the season. Maritza Hayes blasted a shot at Weaver that was deflect right to Jackson for an open-net opportunity. Jackson tied her career high in points on the day with five, as she totaled a career high three assists. Along with her assist to Bartels, she assisted on Marlborough's first two goals of the game.
Badje, a sophomore from Lincoln, was next to score for the Huskers on a penalty kick at 79:56. Badje put the ball in the back of the net after a foul was called on the Lumberjacks in the box during a corner kick from senior Blair Slapper. The goals kept coming less than three minutes later with the first career goal from Areman. Fellow freshman Mayme Conroy setup Areman perfectly five yards away from the goal off a well-placed free kick from Badje. Conroy added her second assist of the game at 85:17 when she pulled goalie Kendra Teesdale away from the net and then passed to Hanssler for her first career goal.
