October 6, 2009
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Marquette men's soccer team gave up a goal in the 74th minute to West Virginia, falling 1-0 to the squad's first divisional BIG EAST opponent of the season. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 2-5-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the BIG EAST.
After a Mountaineers corner kick, senior Jason Bristol picked up the loose ball in front of the six-yard box and beat senior goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski top shelf.
West Virginia (5-2-2, 4-1-0 BIG EAST), which entered the match tied for first in the Blue Division, remained undefeated against Marquette all-time, now owning a 4-0-1 record. WVU junior goalkeeper Zach Johnson, a preseason Second Team All-American, posted his fifth shutout of the season, tallying five saves in game Saturday night.
The teams tested each other in the first half, but only managed one shot on goal apiece. In the 36th minute, a long diagonal from freshman Travis Pittman found senior Ryan Gillespie, who beat a defender and took a shot from the left side of the box to the near post for a Pyzdrowski save.
Minutes later, MU senior Billy Von Rueden crossed the ball to freshman Andrew Krynski, whose header from the right side forced Johnson to make a diving save to his right. The shot by the freshman was the only one of the first frame for head coach Louis Bennett's squad.
The speed of play picked up in the second half as both teams found more scoring opportunities, combining for 15 shots in the second period.
Marquette had its best chance in the 60th minute when sophomore Scott Miller advanced the ball up the left side of the field to classmate Calum Mallace, who hit the far post on a rocket from 30 yards out.
The Golden Eagles also capitalized when senior Nick Kay and WVU keeper Johnson both went up for an air ball which found the foot of Von Rueden, whose shot in the 62nd minute while Johnson was down went wide right of the frame.
WVU put the pressure on with 20 minutes left in the match, forcing Pyzdrowski to make back-to-back deflections on shots by freshman Moeryhan Doue and senior Gift Maworere in the 70th minute.
The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard minutes later, as Bristol connected on the loose ball near a crowd in the goal box. His tally was the first of the season for the senior defender.
With ten seconds left in the match and Marquette pulling all players forward, senior Michael Greene took a hard shot on goal from 25 yards on the right side, forcing Johnson to make his fifth save of the match.
Mallace and junior Anthony Colaizzi received cautions in the game. Colaizzi picked up another yellow card in the 80th minutes which caused Marquette to play a man down for the final 9:38 of the game.
Krynski and Von Rueden led the Golden Eagles with three shots apiece. Freshman Abel Sebele led the Mountaineers with four total shots, and five WVU players had a shot on goal. WVU outshot Marquette, 12-9, while both teams finished play with five shots on goal each. Pyzdrowski tallied four saves in 90 minutes.
Marquette hosts Notre Dame on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Valley Fields in the final match of a four game homestand. Kickoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. C.T., and the game will be broadcast on both Time Warner Cable Sports 32 and WMUR.
